New Orleans is known for its older, historic luxury homes, and these homes are performing well in the real estate market. This week’s Commission Accomplished illustrates that fact with the top three highest priced homes sold from the week of April 21-27 totaling a combined 430 years old.

A Thomas Sully Queen Anne mansion at 4831 St. Charles Ave., originally built in 1884, sold for over $3.5 million on April 22.

A Queen Anne mansion, originally built in 1901, at 1524 Seventh St. in Uptown New Orleans sold for $2.5 million on April 26.

Dating back to 1857, the Dabney House in the New Orleans Garden District located at 2265 St. Charles Ave. sold for over $1.9 million on April 22.

“The luxury home market in New Orleans is doing really well; we have a lot of interest, and the activity at this price point keeps growing,” said Kat Bosio, an agent with Rȇve Realtors and the sales agent at 4831 St. Charles Ave. “The older, historic homes that maintain their quintessential New Orleans architecture, charm, and grandeur, combined with contemporary and modern upgrades and renovations are the perfect mix that will move these homes quickly on the market.”

Eleanor Farnsworth, an agent with Latter & Blum, was the listing agent, and she said 4831 St. Charles Ave. was one of the first projects of the well-renowned Louisiana architect Thomas Sully.

“This is such a true masterpiece, an exquisite home designed by Thomas Sully, and you definitely experience the Queen Anne style of architecture all the way throughout,” said Farnsworth. “This one sold quickly. Our luxury home market across New Orleans is doing spectactular.”

The 1884 Thomas Sully Queen Anne, and grand white Victorian mansion at 4831 St. Charles Ave. was renovated from the studs close to 10 years ago. The renovation was designed by renowned Architectural Digest decorator Jon Vacarri. “My clients were impressed by and drawn to the renovations. They were in another Uptown property, and the renovations were one of the selling points, along with the architectural details that were maintained,” said Bosio.

The architectural details include 14-foot ceilings, soaring staircase, plaster medallions, crystal chandeliers, marble mantles, original pocket doors, and heart of pine floors. There is a formal living room and dining room, study, great room with coffered ceilings with an open floor plan to the gourmet kitchen and breakfast room. There is a wine room with a wet bar. The primary suite has a sitting room, office, marble bathroom, and custom walk-in closets.

A second-floor bedroom features stained-glass windows. Second floor bedrooms also feature access to the balcony that has views of the Uptown neighborhoods. The second-floor sitting room opens into a primary bedroom, which has a primary bath with tile floors, soaking tub, European-inspired shower, and a custom closet. While the primary suite is on the first floor, the second and third floors have the four additional bedrooms.

The front porch has sitting areas to look out onto St. Charles Ave. and the streetcar line. The back porch overlooks the landscaped courtyard. There is off-street parking for two cars and potential for additional gated parking. The home features an elevator and a generator. The exterior is freshly painted.

4831 St. Charles Ave. is on a corner lot, with Upperline St, where St. Charles Ave. curves toward the universities. The home features 5 bedrooms, 5 ½ bathrooms, and 7,046 square feet of living space. “Corner lot homes tend to go quickly and sell for more; corner lots tend to be larger lots with more privacy,” said Bosio. “I personally love how the home is set back further on the lot. St Charles is a busy avenue and noise is of no concern with how set back the home is.”
